 2018 Preview 


       Pleasant Grove completed the 2017 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region five, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Pleasant Grove's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Etowah by a score of 15-12.

       Since 2010, Pleasant Grove has gone a combined 57-37. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pleasant Grove has managed to compile a record of 166-110. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 5A and 93rd in the AHSAA.




       The Spartans will be under the direction of new head football coach Darrell LeBeaux as they enter the 2018 season.

       The Pleasant Grove Spartans will play in Class 5A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Spartans remain in 5A but move from region five over to region four. The Spartans have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-49 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 5A and 72nd in the AHSAA.

       The Spartans will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2018.

       The Spartans open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Mortimer Jordan on Friday, August 24 at Jimmie Trotter Field. Last year the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in first place in Class 5A region six. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Wenonah by a score of 21-14.

       Pleasant Grove and Mortimer Jordan have met a total of 30 times on the football field. The Spartans have a 14-16-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2016 with Mortimer Jordan winning by a score of 22-20.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
